Why did you feel so indifferent about it?

spoilers for the master everyone!!!!!! (or something)

i guess it just didn’t feel like it worked together as a film well enough for me? i enjoyed individual scenes and it wasn’t like i was like, NOT liking it, but all together as a work of art it didn’t leave a very strong impression on me as to its point of view or purpose. it didn’t build to a cohesive whole. i felt like pta had a bunch of different ideas as to where he wanted to go with it and instead of picking one and making it the central theme he just got kind of nebulous and threw a bunch of things in that might have been really powerful if it were a little more focused. the acting was terrific and it was freaking beautiful (i saw it in 70 mm and WOWZA) but it just didn’t come together in a meaningful way for me. it felt like a bunch of different possible movies cobbled together.

That sounds slightly worse than when we watched Colors of the Wind for some reason

at least that had a comedy factor

oh, also, here’s an excerpt from my class website

"This is the end of normalcy for you.  You are now heading into that non-space between the real and the unreal known as The Lunatic Fringe.  This is the place where writing is our friend, where the well-turned phrase is the most precious thing ever created.  Scribed above the gates leading to the infernal regions are the words, “Abandon all hope, ye who enter here!”  As with those nether regions that Dante so gloriously reveals in his Inferno, here at The Lunatic Fringe you have no hope of avoiding pristine prose.  Your only wish here will be for proper conjugation and subjugation of clauses.  From here on out, grammar shall be your only master.  Give yourself up to the power of syntax and diction.  You have no choice but to submit to the will of The Lunatic Fringe.”

I just can’t even start with this

the class is “literature and film.” we’re going to watch pulp fiction in conjunction with no book, because “you really feel like pulp fiction has been influenced by literary genres.”

Got back a little while ago, and I was really impressed. You’re totally right that the plot was shaky and the script was sticky as hell, but I though that aesthetically it was on point and most importantly, it was damn scary

i guess it’s just a matter of how much you can ignore the plot problems. i was too distracted. i agree with you that it was GORGEOUS (aka the best use of 3d i’ve seen since i never saw avatar…) but it didn’t scare me so much as gross me out. idk. alien all the way
